Practicing the Presence of God

Brothers in Christ,

We meet again this [date] at [time] in [location].  Brothers [leader names] will discuss the Spiritual Maxims in the 17th century book, Practicing the Presence of God – Lessons from Brother Lawrence.

On the papal plane on the way home from his first international trip on December 2, 2025, Pope Leo XIV referenced this book as one that has greatly influenced him after being asked the question by a journalist.  He said it is a book that can help anyone understand his spirituality.  “I read it many years ago, but it describes a type of prayer and spirituality where one simply gives his life to the Lord and allows the Lord to lead”.

Pope Leo’s review perfectly sums up the book and what we want to focus on this meeting.  Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence was compiled from his letters and conversations with his friend Fr. Joseph de Beaufort in 1691.  It teaches that holiness is not reserved for monasteries but is available to all through a loving, ongoing conversation with God. Whether washing dishes or repairing sandals, Brother Lawrence turned every action into an act of love and worship.

Scripture References

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – “Rejoice always, Pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”  This short command captures the heart of Brother Lawrence’s practice: prayer is not limited to set times but becomes a constant awareness and conversation with God throughout the day.
  • Colossians 3:23–24 – “Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not man, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you are serving the Lord Christ” Brother Lawrence exemplified this by offering even the most menial kitchen tasks to God with love. This verse challenges men to sanctify their daily labor—whether at a desk, in a truck, on a job site, or at home.
  • John 15:4–5 – “Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.  I am the vine, you are are the branches.  He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Abiding in Christ is the goal. Brother Lawrence’s method is a practical way  to “remain” in Jesus moment by moment, producing peace, patience, and charity even under pressure.
  • James 4: 6-8 – “But he gives more grace; therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble”.  Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.”

Discussion Questions

  1. Brother Lawrence said he felt God’s presence as strongly in the kitchen as in the chapel. Where in your daily routine do you find it easiest to sense God’s presence, and where is it most difficult?
  2. Many men tie their identity and worth to their job performance. How does the teaching of Brother Lawrence and Colossians 3 free us, or challenge us, in how we view our careers and responsibilities as men?
  3. Do you let God lead you, do you ask Him to take charge of your life?  If yes, how have you done that?  If no, why not?
  4. What “fruit” (peace, patience, joy, charity) have you noticed in your life when you’ve been more consistent in turning your life over to God?
  5. What practical steps can you take this week to “offer up” routine activities (commute, meetings, yard work, parenting duties) as acts of love for God? Share a specific idea.

God bless,
