Understanding and Living the Beatitudes: Part 2

You’ll recall that last time we met, we went through the first four Beatitudes of Jesus in our session Understanding and Living the Beatitudes: Part 1. Don’t miss our upcoming session where we’ll continue our discussion of The Beatitudes. In Part 2, we’ll focus on the latter four Beatitudes and how Christ calls us to mercy and righteousness. How can we, as Catholic men, live out these countercultural truths in our daily lives?

Matthew 5: 3-12 (The Beatitudes)

Beatitude 5: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”

  • Why is mercy such a key aspect of Jesus’ teaching?
  • How do we struggle with being merciful in our own lives, especially towards those who have wronged us?
  • How does showing mercy reflect the heart of God?

Beatitude 6: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

  • What does it mean to have a “pure heart”?
  • How do we maintain purity of heart in a world filled with distractions and temptations?
  • How does purity of heart deepen our relationship with God?

Beatitude 7: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

  • What does it mean to be a peacemaker?
  • In what ways can we be instruments of peace in our families, workplaces, and communities?
  • How does peace-making reflect our identity as sons of God?

Beatitude 8: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

  • How do we respond when we face persecution or suffering for our faith?
